Selling Gold Coins in Los Angeles: Compare Purchase Offers
Compare gold coin offers for the same identified coins, quantity and condition. Ask how the buyer used fine-gold content and any collectible characteristics, then compare the net amount and payment terms rather than an advertised percentage alone.

Identify what each offer actually covers
Make a list of the coins being offered for sale. Record the country, denomination, year and any visible mint mark when you can read them confidently. Include the number of coins and whether each is in a grading holder or original packaging. Mark uncertain identifications for review.
A quote for an entire collection cannot be compared directly with a quote for its most desirable pieces. If you may sell only part of the collection, ask for that group to be identified separately. Our coin preparation checklist helps you organize the visit.
Use fine-gold content, not total weight alone
A gold coin can contain an alloy while still holding a stated amount of fine gold. The U.S. Mint's bullion specifications explain that the one-ounce American Gold Eagle contains one troy ounce of gold plus alloy metals. The American Buffalo is a different coin, made from .9999 fine gold. Do not multiply an Eagle's stated one-ounce gold content by its purity again.
For an unfamiliar coin, establish the issue and its specifications before calculating. Face value, gross scale weight and fine-metal content describe different things. A replica or plated piece must not be assigned the composition of the genuine coin it resembles.
Ask whether collectible characteristics were considered
A metal-content estimate is a starting point for discussing bullion. A coin's condition, particular issue, grading information and potential collector interest may need additional review. Age alone does not prove rarity or a premium.

Keep holders, labels and records together. Do not clean a coin or break it out of a holder merely to make the collection easier to weigh. Ask the buyer to explain whether the offer treats a piece as bullion or recognizes additional collectible characteristics.
Compare a dated reference with a real offer
The World Gold Council publishes gold-price reference data. Note the currency, unit and time of a reference before using it. A market price for gold is not a guaranteed bid for an individual coin or unidentified collection.
- Are both offers for the same coins and quantity?
- Was fine-gold content established for each relevant issue?
- Is any premium included, and what supports it?
- Are charges, conditions and the final payment amount clear?
- How long does the quoted offer remain available?
No single percentage proves which coin buyer will provide the strongest offer. Compare actual amounts made on the same basis and clarify changes when a quote is updated.

Does original packaging guarantee a higher offer?
No. Bring it because it can help document the issue and keep items organized, but its effect depends on the specific coin and purchase evaluation.
Can I compare an offer before every coin is identified?
You can discuss an estimate, but note which identifications remain uncertain. Compare final purchase amounts only after the buyers have clearly described the coins included.
