How to Check a Rolex: Why Visual Tests Cannot Authenticate It
No single visual check can authenticate a Rolex. Weight, a serial number, dial printing or hand motion may raise questions, but the complete watch and its configuration need an appropriate physical examination.
Use photographs to identify questions
Compare the claimed reference with reliable manufacturer information, but do not assume that a current catalog contains every older configuration. Ask about an apparent mismatch instead of declaring a watch genuine or counterfeit from one feature.
A photograph may hide movement details, later parts or damage. A familiar-looking dial does not authenticate the whole timepiece, and an unusual configuration may require historical research.
Do not rely on simple pass-or-fail tests
Weight varies with material, bracelet length and configuration. Hand motion, lens appearance and engraving cannot independently establish authenticity. A copied identifying number can appear convincing while proving nothing about the item carrying it.
Water resistance is not an authenticity test. Never immerse a watch to find out whether it is genuine. Do not scratch metal, force controls or use improvised tools to expose numbers or remove components.
Distinguish different kinds of replacement
Ask separately about original components, manufacturer service replacements, aftermarket parts and suspected counterfeit components. A later part does not automatically explain the status of every other part in the watch.

Match records to the actual item
Bring warranty papers, purchase records and service invoices. Check that their descriptions and identifying information correspond to the watch. A box or card alone is not proof of authenticity.
Record known repairs and explain missing history honestly. Do not buy unrelated paperwork to make a watch appear to have documented provenance.
Agree on a suitable examination
Ask the professional what will be examined, whether the case must be opened, what conclusions can be documented and what limitations remain. Give permission before proposed work and obtain an item record if the watch must be left.
Rolex provides official servicing information. Its Certified Pre-Owned programme is a specific brand programme; an independent purchase evaluation is not automatically a Rolex-issued guarantee or a formal authentication report.
