18K gold contains 75% gold, commonly expressed by a 750 fineness mark. To estimate its gold content, apply that fraction to the verified net alloy weight; stones, repairs, condition and complete-jewelry resale still need separate consideration.
Understand the 18K and 750 descriptions
18 divided by 24 is 0.75, so 18K describes an alloy with 75% gold. Fineness expresses that proportion per thousand as 750. The World Gold Council's purity guide explains both ways of describing gold content.
A visible mark is useful, but the ring still needs examination. A repaired section or different setting component may deserve closer attention. Yellow, white and rose 18K alloys share the nominal gold proportion without necessarily sharing the same other metals or finish.
Calculate using the weight of the alloy
For an example of metal quantity only, 8 grams of verified 18K alloy contains 6 grams of gold: 8 × 0.75. This assumes the eight grams excludes stones and any components that are not that alloy.

Inspect condition before spending on restoration
Record worn prongs, a thinning band, cracks and previous sizing. Keep detached parts and repair records with the ring. Ask whether a complete piece has resale potential before authorizing polishing, stone removal or repairs.

Discuss stones and maker information
Bring matching diamond reports, receipts and original packaging if available. A signed ring or an unusual older setting may need a different discussion from a plain band being evaluated for metal. Do not add a complete-ring estimate to its full gold value, which could count the same material twice.

Is an 18K ring always worth more than a 14K ring?
