24K Gold Chains: Fineness, Construction & Selling Guide
A 24K chain is high-purity gold jewelry, but the actual fineness, link construction, clasp and condition still need examination. Keep a metal-content estimate separate from the price paid for design and workmanship.
Read the fineness description carefully
24K describes essentially pure gold. In practical fineness descriptions, you may see figures such as 999 or 999.9 rather than a promise of absolute purity. The World Gold Council explains karat and fineness, including this distinction.
Photograph readable marks on your chain or record them with its paperwork. Ask how the actual chain and its components will be evaluated. Neither yellow color nor a stamp alone proves the composition of the complete necklace.
Inspect the links and clasp as a connected piece
Look for stretched links, flattening, previous repairs and an unreliable clasp. Different link styles use different construction, so identical appearance is not a universal quality test. A wide chain can be hollow or contain less metal than its size suggests.
The FTC notes that pure gold is soft. Handle the necklace carefully and avoid bending links to test it. Ask about the condition and construction before paying for polishing or a repair solely to prepare a sale.
Separate the chain from a pendant in your inventory
A pendant may have a different purity, maker or stone from the chain. Keep the set together but ask whether the components need separate evaluation. The same applies to a replacement clasp or a section repaired with different material.

Compare the actual offer, not a promised return
