Comparing Diamond Purchase Offers in Los Angeles
Compare final offers for the same diamond and setting, with the stone’s identified origin, report information and actual condition considered. Ask which items are included and what checks or charges remain. A retail listing or insurance appraisal is not an equivalent purchase offer.
Identify what each offer covers
Write down whether the proposal includes a loose diamond, the complete ring, side stones, mounting or other matching jewelry. An offer for a center stone alone cannot be directly compared with an amount for an entire necklace or ring.
Keep reports and accessories matched to the appropriate pieces. If you decide to retain the setting or sell only part of a collection, ask for a revised proposal before assuming how the original total divides.
Match the stone and its reported characteristics
GIA explains carat, color, clarity and cut. Those characteristics should be read together, alongside shape, measurements and other report information. Two diamonds of the same weight do not automatically have the same value.
Bring a report if you already have one. Discuss whether additional identification or grading work would be useful before paying for it. A missing report is a question to resolve, not proof that the stone is false or worthless.
Keep natural and laboratory-grown identification clear
GIA describes the essentially similar properties and different growth histories of natural and laboratory-grown diamonds. Their markets are different, and ordinary appearance cannot reliably determine origin.

Allow for the actual condition and examination

Compare purchase amounts with purchase amounts
A retail listing is an asking price for a different transaction. An insurance appraisal may concern replacement, while a grading report does not assign money value, as GIA explains. None of those figures is a guaranteed resale amount.
- Is the amount final or subject to further checks?
- Does it include the setting, side stones and accessories?
- Are any fees or other conditions outstanding?
- How long is the proposal available?
- What are the payment method and timing?
An unusually different offer deserves an explanation of its assumptions. A business category or an advertised percentage cannot settle the comparison by itself.
