Describe the emerald and the complete ring

Share the known stone weight or dimensions, the ring’s metal description and any existing records. If the Colombian origin comes from a family account rather than a laboratory report, explain that distinction. Color alone cannot confirm where a gemstone formed.
Consider quality and condition together
GIA’s emerald quality guide discusses color, clarity, cut and carat weight, including the role of visible inclusions. A large emerald still needs a quality assessment; size by itself does not satisfy our selective gemstone buying focus.
Ask the evaluator to consider the stone’s appearance, condition and any known treatments. An inclusion seen in a photograph is not a complete identification, and an apparently clear stone should not be labeled laboratory-grown without examination.

Use existing reports without making them a prerequisite
GIA describes different colored-stone report services, including identification and reports that also address origin. Read what your actual report covers. A document does not automatically guarantee a particular purchase amount.
Certificates are welcome but not required here. Bring any records you already have and ask what further examination, if any, would be useful before commissioning additional work. Keep natural origin and treatment information as separate questions.
Protect the emerald while preparing the sale
GIA’s emerald care guide cautions against ultrasonic and steam cleaning because fractures and clarity-enhancement materials can be affected. A hardness number alone should not be treated as permission for rough handling or aggressive cleaning.
Bring the ring intact and disclose any damage you know about. Ask before polishing, repairing or removing the stone solely to prepare a sale. Preserve the complete design and records, especially if it may be an estate or signed piece.
Ask for an offer that covers the whole item
