Exclude stones and other non-gold parts from this weight.
Uses karat ÷ 24. Actual purity needs verification.
Keep jewelry intact. Ask for the net metal weight during an evaluation; calculate different karats separately.

Melt-value reference
- Pure-gold equivalent
- Pure-gold reference
This is not a purchase offer. Diamonds, collectible premiums, designer value and transaction costs are not included. Your final offer depends on the actual item and evaluation.
How the reference is calculated
Gold-content reference (USD) = net gold-alloy grams × (karat ÷ 24) × (your USD price per troy ounce ÷ 31.1034768).
One troy ounce is 31.1034768 grams. Nominal 24K is treated as pure gold for this estimate. Markings do not verify actual fineness, and whole-item value can differ from gold content. Read the calculation guide and sources below.

Divide a dated pure-gold quotation per troy ounce by 31.1034768 to obtain its price per gram. Adjust for verified gold-alloy weight and purity; the result is a metal-content reference, not a guaranteed offer.

How to calculate gold value per gram
For gold and plating terminology, see the FTC guide to precious-metal jewelry. A marking describes a claim that must be evaluated with the actual item.
A gold price per gram is a reference for estimating metal content. Use the optional Kitco reference above or another dated quote. A market quote is not a guaranteed purchase offer. Compare offers using the same currency, units, date and verified purity.
One troy ounce equals 31.1034768 grams. Divide a quoted pure-gold price per troy ounce by 31.1034768 to obtain its price per gram. The World Gold Council explains gold units and purity. Check the date and units on any gold reference-price data you use.
Adjust for purity and actual metal weight

For a metal-content estimate, multiply verified gold-alloy weight in grams by its gold fraction and then by the chosen pure-gold reference price per gram. For 18K gold, the fraction is 0.75. For 14K, it is approximately 14/24; testing and the item's actual fineness determine the evaluation.
For example, a hypothetical 12-gram piece of verified 18K gold alloy contains 9 grams of gold. This example has no dollar quotation. Stones, movements, non-gold clasps and other non-gold components must not be counted as gold-alloy weight. Read our 18K gold guide for more about purity.
Why a purchase offer differs from metal content
A calculated metal-content amount is not the same as a buyer's final offer. Evaluation, processing and the type of item affect an offer. There is no universal payout percentage or dealer margin that applies to every transaction.
Intact designer jewelry, collectible coins and luxury watches may need a whole-item evaluation rather than a metal-only calculation. Broken gold still contains gold, but damage can affect a piece's value as wearable jewelry. Ask whether an offer includes any separate value for stones or collectible features.
Prepare gold, Cuban chains and coins for evaluation

Cash 4 Gold & Diamonds buys gold jewelry, scrap gold, Cuban chains and bracelets with or without diamonds, and gold and silver coins, including large quantities. Keep different metals and purities separate where practical, bring available receipts or reports, and avoid dismantling jewelry or cleaning collectible coins before evaluation.

Compare clear offers before deciding
Ask each buyer to identify the tested purity, metal weight, included stones or other components, any deductions and the final amount offered. Compare final offers made at similar times rather than a headline price that may use different units or purity. Gold prices can move in either direction; no article can guarantee a better selling date.

Gold price per gram questions
Is a spot price the amount I will receive?
No. It is a market reference. Your item must be evaluated for its actual materials and any whole-piece value before you receive a purchase offer.
Can I estimate a diamond-set Cuban chain by weighing it?
No. Total weight alone is insufficient. The evaluation must distinguish gold-alloy weight from diamonds and other components. Ask what is included in the final offer instead of treating every gram as gold.
How many grams are in a troy ounce of gold?
A troy ounce is 31.1035 grams, heavier than an ordinary household ounce of 28.35 grams. Gold prices are usually quoted per troy ounce, so divide the quoted price by 31.1035 to get the price per gram of pure gold.
What is a pennyweight in gold buying?
A pennyweight (dwt) is 1/20 of a troy ounce, about 1.555 grams. Some buyers quote per pennyweight rather than per gram, so convert both quotes to the same unit before comparing them; our 10K per-gram guide shows a per-gram calculation.
How do I use a gold price per gram calculation for 14K jewelry?
Multiply the verified 14K alloy weight in grams by about 14/24, then by the chosen pure-gold reference price per gram. Testing and the item's actual fineness determine the evaluation, and stones, non-gold clasps and other components must not be counted as gold-alloy weight. The result is a metal-content reference for discussion, not a guaranteed purchase offer.
Should I wait for a better gold price before selling my jewelry?
Nobody can reliably predict that, because gold prices can move in either direction and no article can guarantee a better selling date. Base the decision on your own circumstances and compare final offers made at similar times, not headline prices in different units. A quick online estimate may differ from an item-specific final offer, so bring your pieces to 617 S. Hill Street in Downtown Los Angeles.
