Diamond Purchase Evaluation vs Insurance Appraisal: What to Ask
A diamond purchase evaluation supports a buyer’s offer. An insurance appraisal is a valuation prepared for a specified purpose and recipient. Before booking, explain which result you need and confirm the examination, documentation, fees and timing.

Choose the result you actually need
If you want to sell a diamond, ask for a purchase evaluation and an offer for the items you are presenting. If an insurer or another recipient requires a valuation report, tell the provider about that separate requirement before booking.
GIA's appraisal guidance explains that grading reports and monetary appraisals are different. A purchase offer is another distinct result: the amount a particular buyer proposes to pay under stated terms.
Ask what the service includes
The word appraisal is sometimes used loosely. Ask the provider to identify the actual deliverable, examination method and fee before agreeing. A free initial conversation does not automatically include a formal report or paid laboratory work.
| Your need | Confirm in advance |
|---|---|
| An offer to sell | Items included, outstanding checks and the purchase amount |
| An insurance valuation | The recipient's requirements and the report's intended use |
| Stone identification or grading | The laboratory service and information it establishes |
If a report has already been prepared, bring it. Read its purpose and assumptions instead of assuming it can be used for every transaction.
Understand qualifications without confusing labels
Ask who will examine the item and which qualifications are relevant to the assignment. Gemological education and valuation training answer different questions.

GIA does not certify businesses, appraisers or gemstones. Ask for the exact credential rather than treating “GIA-certified” as proof of a service's scope. Our appraiser selection guide explains further questions.
Prepare the item and its documents
Bring the complete jewelry, existing grading reports and known repair or condition records. Describe loose stones or damaged settings. Ask before authorizing removal, repair or additional laboratory examination.
The 4Cs help organize quality information. A photo or a phone description cannot establish every relevant characteristic. A mounted piece may also limit what can be observed during the initial examination.
Confirm evaluation and payment timing separately
Tell the buyer if timing matters to you and describe the number of pieces. Ask whether any identification or other checks may be required before an offer is final. A large collection and a single well-documented stone may involve different work.
Cash 4 Gold & Diamonds offers payment by cash, bank wire or business check for agreed purchases. Confirm the method and arrangements before accepting. The time spent examining jewelry is a separate question from the completion or availability of a payment.

Does an evaluation require accepting an offer?
You decide whether to accept a purchase proposal. Clarify any separately agreed examination or report charges before commissioning that work.
